When we lose a job we love and have invested so much in, it can often lead to a loss of our sense of identity. Unfortunately, this is a common experience; many of us become overly defined by our roles instead of understanding their place in our lives.
I completely understand your passion for your job because I feel the same way about mine. I enjoy it so much that there are times I find myself working longer hours or even on weekends—not out of necessity, but because I am genuinely drawn to it. However, it’s important to recognize that this behavior is not healthy.
The harsh reality is that job security is becoming a thing of the past. While I encourage you to pursue a job you love, I urge you to focus on living your best life outside of work.
That’s why I advise all my clients, co-workers, and friends to treat their resumes as works in progress. Update your resume with every new experience or skill you acquire, especially your accomplishments. Many people neglect this important exercise, and when faced with a layoff, they struggle to remember all they’ve learned and achieved.
The key to this exercise is to view it positively; this is an opportunity to recognize and document your progress. This will be beneficial during your performance reviews, as it will empower you during those discussions. Additionally, having an updated resume ready will come in handy if you need to start searching for your next role. Remember, uploading your most current resume to various job boards can help you get noticed even when you’re not actively looking. That’s definitely a plus!
